Eileen Hayes is an author, magazine columnist, counsellor and broadcaster. She is parenting advisor to the UK’s NSPCC, vice-chair of the National Parenting Forum and chair of the Media and Parenting Working Group.

In her latest book, she says “Toddlers can be a real handful, but if parents understand that testing toddler behaviour is quite normal and not naughty, things will be much less stressful. Punishing toddlers for doing what comes naturally is not necessary and will only make things worse.

“There are lots of positive ways to manage challenging toddler behaviour. As one parent quoted in the booklet says ‘co-operation not conflict is the golden rule with toddlers’ and I agree with him. The booklet includes great advice like this and much more from parents who have been on the frontline of toddlerhood. It is recommended reading for anyone who wants to better understand this age group.”

Our Review – This is definately a “user-friendly” book! Thick, glossy pages and well formatted for easy reference. It is not at all overwhelming like some parenting books can be, this can be picked up when you have a spare moment and absorbed easily to help understand the sometimes frustrating and mis-understood behaviour of our toddlers! It is concise and offers easy strategies for defusing and even avoiding the dreaded tantrum but most importantly, helping parents understand why they happen. I would recommend this to any parent who is struggling for the first time with a toddler (even if it may not be your first child)!
